Hemp Oil For Anxiety

As more studies around cannabis arise, the more we learn about the effects cannabis has on the human body. Within cannabis, there is a by-product called cannabidiol, more commonly known as CBD, which is a type of cannabinoid found naturally in marijuana and hemp plants. In early research, there have already been positive signs that CBD has a positive effect in relieving anxiety and anxiety symptoms.

There are different types of cannabinoids within marijuana and hemp plants; THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is what gives you the feeling of being intoxicated or high and CBD (cannabidiol), which does not give you a feeling of being intoxicated or high, but can make you feel things such as less pain, being well rested, and offering anxiety relief. You may still be asking yourself how exactly it all works from a medical standpoint—but at the bottom of it all, CBD and hemp oil is thought as a brain receptor called CB1 [1].

What are receptors? Receptors receive chemical signals from different stimuli in the body; they’re a tiny protein that attaches to your cells so that your cells respond to any incoming stimuli.  It is still being studied the exact way CBD affects CB1, but so far it thought to alter serotonin signals. Your serotonin levels are important in that it impacts your mental health and are contributing factors in causing depression and anxiety. When it comes to mental health issues in the United States; there is an estimated 30% of adults – 66 million people – and an estimated 25% of teens and preteens that are impacted by anxiety [2].

When everyday people go to the doctors to seek help to manage their anxiety, typically they are prescribed a traditional prescription to manage low serotonin levels; those prescriptions are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. For most people, CBD can be a more natural alternative for those SSRIs prescriptions in anxiety management. (Make sure you speak with your medical provider to see if this is an option for you before switching any of your medications.)

There have been many studies that show the benefits of using hemp oil for anxiety. There are various types of anxiety and different symptoms individuals may face, but overall the National Institute on Drug Abuse has said that CBD has been shown to reduce stress, lowered racing heart rates, improve insomnia, relieve social anxiety, and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) [3].

Another aspect of cognitive health issues such as anxiety can be linked to inflammation. Research has been done around the cytokine model of cognitive function studying how inflammation impacts our brains and can cause anxiety disorders. CBD and hemp oil is an anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety compound—studies have shown that it is a natural anxiolytic and is effective in calming anxiety and anxiety symptoms without the side-effects of pharmaceutical anti-anxiety medicines [4]. It has also been found that CBD lowers activity in the amygdala and increase the prefrontal cortex activation. These two parts of the brain are associated with anxiety. Research also points to CBD being able to activate the hippocampus neurogenesis—meaning regenerating new neurons. This activates CB1 receptors which work with gamma-aminobutyric acid and glutamate levels to find a good balance to reduce anxiety [5].

The more research being done on how CBD impacts the human body, the more scientists are able to treat common disorders in more than one traditional way. We look forward to sharing more hemp oil for anxiety and anxiety symptoms as more research comes out. Stay tuned!
